The First Station

Jesus is condemned to death

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him, and the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe. Pilate brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgement seat at a place called "The Pavement"....he said to the Jews "Here is your King".

All: Father, in the death of Christ you have condemned sin. Grant us the gift of eternal life in the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful mother weeping, close to Jesus to the last.

The Second Station

Jesus receives his cross

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Jesus said " If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow me."

All: Lord Jesus, you humbled yourself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Help us to love your cross, and accept the crosses you ask us to carry for love of you.
Through her heart, his sorrow sharing, all his bitter anguish bearing, now at length the sword has passed.

The Third Station

Jesus falls for the first time

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

O Lord, your hand has come down upon me, I am bowed and brought to my knees. My heart throbs, my strength is spent; the very light has gone from my eyes. My friends avoid me like a leper; those closest to my stand afar off.
O Lord in whose strength alone we are able to do anything, help us to keep ourselves blameless in your sight, and to offer our bodies as a holy and living sacrifice, pleasing to you.

O how sad and sore distressed was that mother highly blest of the sole-begotten One.

The Fourth Station

Jesus meets his Mother

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All:
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Simeon said to Mary: "Behold this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against, and a sword will pierce through you own soul too, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. [Luke 2]
Dear Lord, as we remember the sorrows of the Virgin Mary, grant that we may receive from your mercy the fruits of the salvation you have won for us.

Christ above in torment hangs; she beneath beholds the pangs of her dying glorious Son.

The Fifth Station

Simon helps Jesus to carry his cross

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross [Mk. 15]

God our Father, you so loved us that you sent your Son to atone for our sins: help us to love one another and to carry each other's burdens
for the love of Jesus.

Is there one who would not weep, whelmed in miseries so deep, Christ's dear mother to behold?

The Sixth Station

Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All:
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Many were astonished at him - his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the sons of men. [Isaiah 52]

Lord Jesus, help us to reflect the glory of your face, and to be changed into your likeness.

Can the human heart refrain from partaking in her pain, in that mother's pain untold?

The Seventh Station

Jesus falls for the second time

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All:
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Save me, O God, I have sunk into the mud of the deep and there is no foothold. It is for you that I suffer taunts, that shame covers my face. [Psalm 68]

Father, grant that we may follow in the steps of Jesus, who suffered for us and redeemed us, not with gold of silver, but with his own Precious Blood.

Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled, she beheld her tender child, all with bloody scourges rent.

The Eighth Station

The women of Jerusalem mourn for Our Lord

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who bewailed him and lamented him. But Jesus turned to them and said "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children." [Luke 23]

Dear Lord, you are merciful, not angry with those who hope in you; give us the ability to mourn as we should for the sins we have committed, and so gain your glory.

For the sins of his own nation, saw him hang in desolation, till his spirit forth he sent.

The Ninth Station

Jesus falls for the third time

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Now that I am in trouble they gather, they gather and mock me. They take me by surprise and strike me and tear me to pieces. They provoke me with mockery on mockery and gnash their teeth. [Psalm 34]

God our Father, watch over us when we are crushed by the weight of our sins and forgive us so that we may serve you with all our hearts.

O thou Mother! Fount of love! Touch my spirit from above, make my heart with thine accord.

The Tenth Station

Jesus is stripped of his garments

Priest: We adore you O Christ and we bless you.

All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom; so they said to one another "let us not tear it, but cast lots for it instead" [John 19]

Dear Jesus, grant that nothing may separate us from your love: neither trials, pains, nor persecutions, but that in all things we may be more closely united to you.

Make me feel as thou hast felt; make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ my Lord.

Father, your Son Jesus Christ has gained for us eternal life by the shedding of his blood. He has reconciled us to you and to each other, and released us from the slavery of sin: give us the strength to live his life of grace.

Holy Mother, pierce me through, in my heart each wound renew of my Saviour crucified.

Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" [Mark 15]

Lord Jesus, dying you destroyed our death and rising you restored our life. We thank you for your sacrifice and the new life you give us.

Let me share with thee his pain who for all my sins was slain, who for me in torments died.

The Thirteenth Station

Jesus is taken down from the cross

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb. And Joseph took the body, and laid it in his own new tomb, and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. [John 19]

God our Father, you raised Jesus Christ from the dead through your Holy Spirit. Give life to our mortal bodies through the Spirit who dwells in our hearts.

By the cross with thee to stay, there with thee to weep and pray, is all I ask of thee to give.
